Pioneer-Endicott Green Roof

Our team collaborated with the private developer, lead architect, structural engineer, construction manager, City of Saint Paul, Capitol Region Watershed District and various contractors to complete this historic renovation project that includes a new 2,500 SF rooftop plaza with a green roof. We worked together to design an attractive and multi-functional outdoor space that provides stormwater management, usable plaza space and a green oasis amidst an otherwise sea of concrete. We also collaborated with the Capitol Region Watershed District to help the developer obtain a $15,000 cost-share grant for the green roof that provides stormwater storage and improves water quality. Construction was completed in June 2015.

Challenges

The existing structural elements could not support a rooftop plaza.
The Pioneer and Endicott buildings are on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, which required more time for design and the necessary approvals.

Solution and Results

We provided the site analysis, stormwater modeling, design/engineering, regulatory assistance and we will complete our construction administration services in the summer of 2015. Our team designed a rooftop plaza that includes a pergola, benches, planter boxes, a fireplace, seating space and a vegetated green roof surrounding most of the plaza.

Created a multi-functional plaza that provides stormwater management benefits and a usable outdoor space for residents, visitors and businesses.
Designed a lightweight green roof system to decrease the amount (and cost) of added structural components.
Helped the developer obtain a $15,000 cost-share grant from Capitol Region Watershed District.
