Bookmen Stacks Condominiums

Solution Blue worked with a private, landscape architect, watershed district and City of Minneapolis integrating stormwater management and landscape aesthetics into this multi-story condominium structure. We designed and implement imaginative solutions to manage, store and re-use stormwater on-site and created a usable green space for recreational opportunities. Our design included a state-of-the-art sustainable green roof system which functions both as stormwater management, and a community gathering space.

Challenges

Building exists within an urban setting with minimal space available for stormwater management features.
Green roof had to exist above a parking ramp with limited capacity to support an intensive-profile (12”+) green roof.
Reducing the City’s monthly stormwater utility fees required imaginative solutions to efficiently manage, store and re-use stormwater on-site.

Solution and Results

Solution Blue team members provided site assessment, design development, water modeling and civil engineering services in order to receive approval from the City of Minneapolis and local Watershed organization. Our design incorporates a state-of-the-art system that captures, cleans and re-uses stormwater via an ecological green roof system.

Employed a lightweight intensive (14” deep) profile that provides stormwater storage, filtration and water re-use.
Installed a 10,000-gallon reservoir tank for supplemental storage that supplies irrigation water.
Implemented a functional, usable green space in an urban setting that provides recreational opportunities, achieves stormwater management objectives and improves the building’s aesthetic appeal.
