UNIVERSITY OF MN – COMMONWEALTH TERRACE CO-OP

We collaborated with the University of MN, Commonwealth Terrace Co-op (CTC), the geotechnical engineer, lead contractor and several other contractors to successfully complete this pavement restoration and stormwater improvements project at CTC’s student housing complex on the University’s Saint Paul campus. This project included several new catch basins and a trench drains to prevent the stormwater runoff from getting into the CTC community center that was previously flooding several times each year due to insufficient stormwater infrastructure. Along with the stormwater improvements, there was a good amount of mill-and-overlay asphalt, new curbs and pedestrian ramps, new signage, turf restoration and enclosures for the trash/recycling containers. This project spanned four phases, with construction for the final phase being completed in the fall of 2019.

Challenges

CTC community center was flooding several times each year due to insufficient stormwater infrastructure.
CTC complex needed to remain operational during construction, which made it challenging to efficiently coordinate the demolition and construction work.

Solution and Results

Our team provided a complete package of services including the site analysis, planning, stormwater modeling, design/engineering, regulatory approvals, bidding assistance and construction administration services to successfully complete this site renovation project. Altogether, the project includes over 30,000 square feet of new pavement, new & rebuilt stormwater structures, new sidewalks with handicap access ramps, new curbs and turf restoration for the disturbed areas.

Provided a “belt and suspenders” solution for the flooding problem by using a combination of stormwater catch basins along with a trench drain to effectively handle large rain events without flooding the CTC community center.
Used both mill-and-overlay paving and subgrade repair of specific areas to extend the pavement’s lifespan by 15 more years.
Created handicap accessible sidewalks to provide accessibility for all types of people.
