Juxtaposition Arts

Our team has been collaborating with Juxtaposition Arts, 4RM+ULA, TENxTEN, the City of Minneapolis, and several other consultants on this art center campus grounds and renovation project at the intersection of West Broadway and Emerson Avenue North in North Minneapolis. This project includes a park-able artist courtyard, a new art center building, a new artist office building and several site features including landscape beds, a central spine, an entryway enhancement, and various integrated stormwater management features. These stormwater management features include a 430 square foot tree trench planting system, an underground infiltration chamber, upgraded biofiltration planters and a cistern that will reuse the water for irrigation. Construction is planned to be completed by the end of 2023.

Challenges

Site is located at a visible and busy intersection in north Minneapolis. Accommodating the adjacent roadways and utilities was difficult given the large number of stakeholders and varying project schedules.
Site is approximately 83 percent impervious and experiences frequent flooding in the alley.

Solution and Results

Our team provided the necessary and value-added services including the site analysis, stormwater modeling, civil engineering, regulatory assistance, MWMO grant assistance, bidding support and the ongoing construction observations to help complete this project in 2023. We designed a system of stormwater features that includes a tree vault, bioinfiltration berm, raingardens and rainwater harvesting system to supplement the landscape irrigation system. To help fund this system, we collaborated with MWMO to investigate, model, design and obtain grant funding for this sustainable and innovative rainwater harvesting system.

Designed a multi-faceted stormwater system that includes above-ground and below-ground features for an effective and attractive solution.
Collaborated with the design team to design a tree vault system in the NW portion of the site that captures runoff from the parking lot, filters it, and then discharges it via drain tile to a biofiltration berm.
Collaborated with MWMO to help Juxtaposition Arts obtain a $216,000 grant to help pay for the stormwater system.
