MN Landscape Arboretum – Grand Entry Plaza

Our team collaborated with the University of MN, Landscape Arboretum staff, the lead architect, structural engineer and several contractors to successfully complete the new Grand Entry Plaza & Gatehouse at the MN Landscape Arboretum. This project included the creation of two new drive lanes for improved vehicle access, a new gatehouse for faster customer service, new stone retaining walls, planting beds and a central rain garden for stormwater management, educational display and greatly enhanced aesthetics. Planning began in late 2013 and construction was completed in the summer of 2014.

Challenges

Site is between two wetlands that needed to be analyzed and carefully planned for to mitigate the impacts. caused by widening the roadway for the added drive lanes.
The construction phase ran from May through August (the Arboretum’s busiest season) so the demolition and construction work was very cramped for staging of materials and ongoing traffic.

Solution and Results

Our team provided a comprehensive package including the site analysis, wetland planning, stormwater modeling, design/engineering, regulatory approvals, bidding assistance and construction administration services to successfully complete this exceptional renovation project. The primary improvements include a new gatehouse, 2 added drive lanes, stone retaining walls, planting beds, a sediment basin and a beautiful rain garden.

Created 2 added drive lanes for improved vehicle access and decreased waiting times for visitors.
Enhanced the site aesthetics to create a magnificent entry into this world renowned Arboretum.
Created a central rain garden for improved stormwater management, educational display and enhanced aesthetics.
Used 13 different plant varieties created by the University of MN throughout the landscape beds.
