Ridgedale YMCA

Our team collaborated with the Greater Twin Cities YMCA, lead architect, mechanical engineer, construction manager, City of Minnetonka and several contractors to successfully complete this 10,000 square foot building expansion along with new landscaping, walkways, utilities, a plaza and stormwater features including a beautiful rain garden. During our design process, we saved several large trees by working around them with the stormwater basins and other site features to preserve these trees for their aesthetic and environmental benefits. Construction began in 2012 and was completed in August of 2013.

Challenges

Site contained a large hill that prevented good visibility to the YMCA building from the adjacent city street, which the YMCA had attributed to lower monthly attendance numbers than other MN facilities of similar size.
Site contained several mature trees (some were in poor condition and some in good condition) that needed to be assessed and accommodated for saving many of these trees, which made the grading and utility design rather difficult.

Solution and Results

Our team provided a complete range of site services including the site assessment, tree inventory, stormwater modeling, civil engineering, landscape design, regulatory approvals and construction administration services to complete this 10,000 square foot building expansion with the related site improvements. The new site features include walkways, utilities, landscaping, an outdoor plaza and stormwater features including a retention pond and rain garden for improved water quality, storage and infiltration.

Greatly improved visibility to the YMCA building through extensive earthwork and careful placement of landscape features to accentuate the new building expansion.
Enhanced the overall landscape including a new plaza, planters, tables and several flowers, shrubs and trees.
Saved several healthy trees to provide improved aesthetics and environmental benefits.
