YMCA Early Childhood Learning Center – University of Minnesota

Our team has been collaborating with University of Minnesota, Greater Twin-Cities YMCA, CNH Architects, H+U Construction and the City of Minneapolis. This 12,000 square foot building reuses an existing stormwater system to control the runoff on the site and reroute it to the on-site biofiltration swale. Construction was completed in 2021.

Challenges

Site is located within the campus of the University of Minnesota and must align with the Universities’ standards with stormwater management.
Site has existing stormwater management system that is to be preserved and retrofitted to accommodate the new building.
South side of the property is adjacent to a parking lot. Grading of the site must accommodate possible runoff and fixed elevation of the parking lot.

Solution and Results

Our team provided the necessary and value-added services including the site analysis, stormwater modeling, civil engineering, regulatory assistance, bidding support and the ongoing construction observations to help complete this project in 2021. We retrofitted a stormwater system to accommodate the addition of a new building and playground without changing the grade of the adjacent parking lot to the south.

Retrofitted an existing stormwater system to accommodate the new building, playground and parking lot.
Collaborated with the University of Minnesota to properly manage stormwater to their set standards.
Designed a solution to manage stormwater around the playground that does not require changing the grade of the adjacent parking lot.
